Georgia currently is on the eighth edition of thier flag. The current flag was adapted on May 8, 2003.
The 2001-2003 flag was deemed the worst flag in the North American Vexillology Association’s survey of 72 American and Canadian flags.
The current flag has good design elements, however is not a unique flag. The flag was designed after the First National Flag of the Confederation.
Keep it simple: With the exception of the seal on the canton, this is a very simple design.
Use meaningful symbolism: The flag design uses the basic outline of the First National Flag of the Confederation or “Stars and Bars”. The only symbolism specific to Georgia is in the thirteen stars, which symbolize being part of the original thriteen colonies, and the seal. The three pillars in the seal are representative of the three branches of government. The arch is symbolistic of the state’s constitution. The colonial man has his sword drawn to represent defence of the states constitution.
Use two or three basic colors: In this flag we see four colors being used.
No lettering or seals: This flag does hace the seal of Georgia on it. There are elements of the seal that could be conveyed with imagery, but are spelt out.
Be distinctive or be related: This flag is pretty much a copy and paste of the Stars and Bars. It is not distinct and is too related.
Keep it simple: I took the elements that were powerful in the original flag, the thirteen stars and the state seal, and simplified it.
Use meaningful symbolism: The state seal has such powerful symbolism to it, that I felt like it should be included in the flag. I have simplified it, but I believe that the conviction to the state and protecting it is there. I kept the thirteen stars as well. The blue in the flag is a symbolism of the orignal Georgia. The first flag had a blue field. In adding the white stripe, it symbolizes progression in moving forward.
Use two or three basic colors: In this flag we see three colors being used.
No lettering or seals: I have taken out the seal and wording.
Be distinctive or be related: This flag is distinct.
